Costa Rica’s mountains, beaches, waterfalls and tropical rainforests offer families an unmatched natural destination for adventure. Wedged between two oceans and two continents, Costa Rica is home to some of the greatest biodiversity on earth: gigantic ferns, orchids, neon-billed toucans, three-toed sloths, monkeys, peccaries, crocodiles, iguanas and frogs, for starters. You can encounter it from a variety of exciting approaches: rafting a lazy river, riding horseback through the jungle, flying through the forest on a zip-line and watching a volcano erupt. Nature has never been so impressive, and your family has never had so much fun. Read on for a fun packed family vacation!
Costa Rica is not just one of the world’s greatest natural treasures, but also a family adventure paradise. This trip features what we believe are the most exciting and fascinating activities for families within this ecologically diverse country.
Family Trip Highlights
Learn all about bats at Tirimbina Rainforest Center. On a night walk into the forest you’ll find the mist nets that scientists have erected to trap bats.- Visit a working ranch, Hacienda Pozo Azul, where kids will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of a rafting excursion or enjoy a horseback ride.
- Take a chocolate tour and learn how the cacao bean is transformed into the locally made organic chocolates that we’ll have a chance to sample later.
Take a float trip down the Rio Peñas Blancas as you watch and listen for monkeys, parrots, toucans, sloths, iguanas, frogs, crocodiles, turtles, and Jesus Christ lizards along the riverbank.- Take a tram ride up to 125 feet above the forest floor, and then either return via tram or via a zipline tour. (Minimum age is 8 for the zipline.)
- Finish the day with a soak in the hot springs, where a waterfall offers a natural massage. If the night is clear, you may see some flamboyant natural fireworks, as red hot lava pours from the volcano.
